Most “three-way” car audio systems aren’t really three-way. They use a 6.5-inch midbass to cover the midrange too, and lean on the tweeter to grab whatever’s above 3 kHz. What that means in practice is a single 6.5-inch driver being asked to move air at 80 hertz and reproduce vocals at 1 kilohertz — the same driver, at the same time, doing two properly different jobs. If you’ve ever thought vocals sounded a bit recessed or muddled in a car, that’s usually why.
The CVEN3SM exists so the 6.5-inch below it doesn’t have to do the midrange job. That’s the whole point of it. Once you free the midbass from covering vocals, you can specify it differently — and once you specify a dedicated midrange, you can make it do the vocal job properly.
We use an N52H neodymium motor — the highest grade of rare-earth magnet in common production — for the motor force and the tight magnetic-gap tolerances it allows. The voice-coil former is DuPont Kapton, which is properly light, so the cone can start and stop quickly against a transient. The dust cap is woven carbon fibre. The suspension is a DuPont aramid spider, which stays linear across its excursion range in a way the treated-cotton alternatives don’t.

N52H NEODYMIUM MOTOR
The most expensive magnetic material we could specify.
Most car-audio midranges in this size class rely on ferrite. We do not. The CVEN3SM is built around a high-grade N52H neodymium motor — a rare-earth magnetic compound that delivers roughly five times the flux density of standard ferrite, in a fraction of the volume. The result is a tiny, exquisitely controlled motor that can launch the cone and bring it back to absolute stillness between transients. The reward is a midrange that resolves the air around instruments rather than smearing them together. The grade-H designation also guarantees stable performance at the elevated operating temperatures a busy voice coil reaches during long, loud listening.
PRECISION-CAST ALUMINIUM FRAME
A platform that contributes nothing.
A midrange’s chassis must do one thing exceptionally well — disappear. The CVEN3SM’s frame is precision-cast in aluminium alloy, then machined to mounting tolerances that allow flush-fit installation in factory door-cards, custom A-pillars and reference-grade pods alike. The casting process eliminates the resonant ring of stamped steel baskets and the deformation of injection-moulded plastic frames, leaving the motor with a dead-quiet reference against which to work. Compact 45mm mounting depth opens up installation locations that simply would not be possible with a deeper-frame design.
DUPONT KAPTON VOICE COIL FORMER
Lighter than aluminium. Tougher than steel.
Inside the magnetic gap sits a former milled from Kapton — the same polyimide film DuPont engineered for spacecraft thermal blankets and the wiring harnesses on Mars rovers. It is virtually massless compared to alternative materials, dimensionally stable from cryogenic temperatures up to 400°C, and acoustically inert. That last point matters: a heavier former would dampen the cone’s response to fine detail and slow the leading edge of a transient. Kapton lets the two-layer copper winding move the cone, and gets out of the way.
