Drivers Automotive Show (hosted by DAS Society) was a scorcher, and we mean that in more ways than one. With temperatures pushing past 30 degrees, the event tested the dedication of everyone in attendance. Trust us, that’s serious heat for us UK folk, especially at an outdoor event with limited shade. Thankfully, the atmosphere more than made up for it.
The show featured everything you’d want from a modern automotive event. Rev battles echoed across the venue throughout the day, a live DJ kept the energy levels high, and the showgrounds were packed with everything from carefully restored classics to wild custom builds. But for us, there was one attraction that stood out above the rest: the audio battles.
If you’re not familiar with DAS Society, they’re a UK automotive community that has built a reputation for bringing together enthusiasts from all corners of the scene. Their events aren’t just about static displays or social media photo opportunities. They focus on creating an atmosphere where owners can actually enjoy and use their vehicles. Drivers Automotive Show has quickly become one of the standout events on the calendar because it combines great cars, great people and plenty of entertainment throughout the day.
The audio battles perfectly captured that spirit.
The format was refreshingly simple. Competitors would enter the battle arena, crank up their systems and play 30 seconds from a song of their choice. The winner wasn’t decided by technical measurements or judging sheets. Instead, it came down to crowd reaction. The people watching decided who progressed and who went home.
What made this particularly interesting was that sheer bass output wasn’t enough to guarantee a win.
A lot of people assume louder bass automatically equals a better audio system. While impressive low-frequency output certainly gets attention, the Drivers Automotive Show audio battles highlighted something we’ve always believed. Balance matters.
Some competitors arrived with enormous bass-heavy systems capable of shaking the ground. Others turned up with smaller setups that focused on overall musical performance. Time and time again, the crowd responded best to systems that delivered the complete package. Clear vocals, crisp highs, powerful bass and the ability to project sound beyond the vehicle itself all played a huge role.
Several runners-up proved exactly that point. On paper their systems were objectively smaller than some of the competition, yet they managed to outperform larger builds thanks to excellent clarity and projection. You could hear every part of the track, even standing a considerable distance away from the vehicle. The crowd appreciated that. It wasn’t just about feeling the bass in your chest. It was about hearing the music as a whole.
One system that really caught our eye featured a VIBE Slick Twin 12″ ported enclosure paired with a SLICKPROBOX6 mounted above it.
It wasn’t the loudest vehicle in attendance, nor was it trying to be. Instead, it demonstrated just how effective a well-designed system can be when every component is working together. The Slick Twin enclosure delivered strong, controlled bass while the SLICKPROBOX6 handled the upper frequencies with impressive authority. Vocals remained clear, instruments retained their detail and the system projected remarkably well into the crowd.
What impressed us most was that this wasn’t a heavily customised one-off installation. It was largely based around off-the-shelf VIBE products. That’s important because it demonstrates what can be achieved without needing a fully bespoke competition build. Good engineering goes a long way.
Enclosure design is often overlooked, but it plays a huge role in how a subwoofer performs. A well-designed ported enclosure helps maximise efficiency, allowing the subwoofers to play louder and deeper without requiring excessive power. Pair that with properly matched speakers handling the rest of the frequency range and you end up with a system that sounds bigger than the sum of its parts.
Of course, there could only be one winner.
Mani and his VXR absolutely cleaned up.
His all-VIBE speaker system delivered exactly what the crowd wanted. At the heart of the system were four BDC15SPL-V4 15-inch subwoofers producing huge low-frequency output capable of 157+dB. Moving that much air isn’t easy, but the system remained composed and musical throughout. The bass had authority without completely overwhelming the rest of the track.
Supporting the low end was a serious front stage built around VIBE BLACKAIRPRO6M-V0 midrange speakers. These played a major role in the system’s success. Midrange speakers are responsible for reproducing much of the detail we associate with music, including vocals, guitars, synths and countless other instruments. When done properly, they help maintain clarity even when the volume is pushed to extreme levels.
Completing the setup were BDPRO4T-V0 and BDPRO3T-V7 tweeters, delivering the high-frequency detail needed to cut through the mix. The result was a system that didn’t just sound loud. It sounded complete.
As the competition progressed, it became increasingly obvious why Mani was pulling ahead. The bass grabbed your attention immediately, but it was the overall balance of the system that kept the crowd engaged. Every part of the frequency range was doing its job. The audience could hear the music clearly, whether they were standing next to the vehicle or halfway across the arena.
Between enjoying the show and doing our best to avoid melting in the midday sun, the team took some time to explore the rest of the event.
There was no shortage of standout vehicles.
One of our favourites was a rare Mk5 Golf GTI Pirelli Edition. With only 222 examples produced, it’s not something you see every day. Sitting low on air ride suspension and featuring a VIBE Pulse installation, it managed to combine OEM+ styling with just the right amount of attitude. Clean, purposeful and exceptionally well executed.
Another vehicle that caught our attention was a beautifully presented Tiguan. No VIBE install this time, but we’re enthusiasts first and audio nerds second. The immaculate white paintwork, aggressive stance and polished wheels made it impossible to ignore. It was a great reminder that not every project needs to be extreme to make an impression. Sometimes, attention to detail speaks for itself.
As the day drew to a close and the sun finally started to ease off, it was clear that the Drivers Automotive Show had delivered something special. Great cars, great people and a genuinely entertaining audio competition made for an event we’ll remember for a long time.
A huge shout-out goes to Eliza, Joe and the rest of the DAS Society team for putting on such a fantastic show. Events like this don’t happen by accident, and the effort that goes into organising them is obvious when you see the atmosphere they’ve created.
